Are the recruiters helping the candidate or the jobs board?

When candidates are looking for an accountancy jobs in Carlisle are the recruiters really helping them by promoting jobs boards. Accountancy vacancies in Carlisle just look like a tick list.

Let us assume that I am a candidate and that i am looking for an accountancy job in Carlisle or an internal audit jobs in Carlisle. Where do i start? Historical convention would be for me to call an accountancy recruitment agency in Carlisle and speak to their recruitment consultants.  This recruitment agency would have known the area, the key players and decision makers and would also have a realistic grasp of what the salary banding of said accountancy jobs in Carlisle would be.

The recruitment agency in Carlisle would also know the geography, we had an application form a part qualified accountancy vacancy in cumbria from a lady living in the south lakes who had been recommended to go for an interview (see our article on interview advice) in Carlisle – the problem was that the finance vacancy in Carlisle meant a good two hour drive each way, not really a runner and quite demonstrably a waste of time all ways round a certainly did not get the vacancy filled  to the disappointment of all concerned, this would have been worse if it were a lower level role such as one of the part qualified cima jobs in Carlisle.

AS of today’s date, may 2009 it is the jobs boards that rule the roost on search engines such as google, msn and yahoo,  Cooper north are the only locally owned accountancy recruitment agency  in cumbria to hold a top 10 slot for the phrase ! Whilst we at Cooper north are delighted with this we have calls from the jobs boards asking if we wish to advertise with them but we do not feel that this will really help candidates looking for accountancy jobs in Carlisle, or finance jobs in Cumbria as these firms do not know the area and do not tend to develop a long term relationship with candidates – guiding them through from their part qualified accountancy jobs in Carlisle through to their newly qualified accountancy job in the lake district. They tend not to build a relationship or indeed have knowledge of what the right finance job would be to develop the candidate’s career – which companies are more solvent than others and which have the finance director that will genuinely help to develop their career and to complete their log book.

A career in accountancy can be made or broken by the right career moves - we have seen over the years that many CIMA part qualified jobs are filled by good candidates who then fail to gain the breadth of experience and then struggle on their log book or to get interviews when the right newly qualified accountancy job in Carlisle does arise.
