Ulverston earthquake!

Accountancy jobs Cumbria, under threat due to the earthquake?

The other morning we were walking into our recruitment agency in Cumbria like any other morning. Mid morning came and a shudder went through the building. There are often low flying planes in the lake district as the RAF regularly train for their defense needs in the area. No one in our recruitment agency in Cumbria really thought too much about it.

Then the phone rang, it was one of the Part Qualified Accountants at sellafield and one of or assistant accountants doing a temporary job in Ulverston for us rang also. The earthquake had hit!!

This was the largest earthquake in the North West for 174 years. Measuring 3 plus on the Richter scale; its epicenter being in Ulverston in the Lake District it shook buildings and one guy doing a temporary accounts job in Barrow in Furness for us, described it as a truck hitting the building.

New nuclear power stations and therefore nuclear jobs are potentially planned for Kirksanton, Braystones near Egremont and at Sellafield. An expert from the British Geological Survey (BGS) has assured residents of the west lakes and Lake District that underground tremors are no threat to any nuclear plant or for the potential jobs in Cumbria. Naturally enough though it does raise concern, our office is only 20 minutes from ulverston  and the thought of a large earthquake so close is slightly concerning. Some Lake District residents have begun to worry that the plans for Accountancy jobs in Cumbria may be shelved if this if this earthquake and the potential of further quakes were indeed a threat to the plans.

The result of this would be that the potential expansion of supply chain would be hit, many hundreds of jobs in cumbria (both permenant  and contract jobs) do rely on this supply chain and indeed the potential accountancy vacancies in the lake district that are integral to the planning and auditing of this supply chain could also not be generated.

Some working in jobs in Carlisle have said not to worry about a small quake in the south lakes. However, this was not a small quake and it is not the first – there was an earthquake in 2007 in Millom - only 40 minutes from Sellafield, with another quake so soon and so close - are the finance jobs in Cumbria under threat?
